My wonderful journey into a unique mountain scenery, VAL GARDENA’s Dolomites.

It was fascinating to experience Val Gardena, with its Ladine culture and traditions.

After a comfortable 2.30 hours transfer by bus from Verona Airport, we reached the Dolomties. Val Gardena’s impressive mountain peak “Sassolungo” welcomes us from afar.

We booked our accommodation in the village centre of Selva, close to the ski slopes and near to the Ciampinoi cable car. Hotel Armin is more than it being a family-run hotel, it made us feel part of the Pitscheider family. Annamarie is a gracious and generous hostess, and we were captivated by the stories of how she and Armin embarked on the adventure of building a luxury hotel from the ground up, when they were just in their 20s. The dinners we enjoyed at the hotel were among the most beautifully prepared and presented that I have encountered anywhere.

It was exciting to see the FIS run off on Ciampinoi, ski past an ancient castle, and then experience the beautiful 10.5 km La Longia run down to Ortisei from the top of Seceda Mountain. Pass from the Ciampinoi ski area to the opposite site is very comfortable due the Gardena Ronda underground train to Col Raiser. We had lunch at Daniel’s hut, with delicious gnocchi with venison and the typically spinach and cheese dumplings. After the first day and the good introduction which gave us Oswald, a good English speaking ski teacher from Selva Ski School, Peter and I had the perfect sunny day for our Sella Ronda tour. We did the orange direction, as he suggested, which gave us even more time in the sunshine. The route showcased the astounding vistas of pink summits, snowfields, and deep blue sky as it passed through the legendary ski terrains around Corvara and Pordoi.

Val Gardena was unique experience, sunny location, sweeping views and fine food, all in all a successful ski holiday in one of the most renowned skiing areas of the Italian Alps.
